Hello Everyone and Welcome to my Blog.

Above is a recent photo of me in one of my more-beautiful sites. Behind me is a crystal-clear river which flows down the slopes of Mt Elgon - its cold, clean water - one can literally drink it off the river. I have done it - I am alive and kicking!

OK - so I want to share with everyone my experiences as an architect practicing mostly in East Africa but blessed to practice in almost all of Sub-Saharan Africa including West Africa, Central Africa, of course most of East Africa and Madagascar as well.

So this is my first post - I will be brief but later on I shall share my experiences and anecdotes with everyone.

Today I add this small paragraph just to say a thank you to all of you who have read and enjoyed my travels with me. Its a hobby I enjoy whilst doing work that I enjoy.

My advice to all of us - including me - is that we spend more than a third of lives working - some of us work for more than half of our lives: so enjoy your work. If you don't enjoy your work - change it. Its never too late.

CHASING THE SUNRISE: MT OLOLOKWE

And He it is who spread the earth and made in it firm mountains and rivers ....  The Holy Quran (Surah Rad. ver.3) 20May2022 The announcement is curt and clear - ' Remember we leave Sabache Camp at 330am' the group leader whom we all referred to as AW announced in a firm but soft voice. She is an avid hiker and arranges trips for friends and also those suffering travel lust - as I do. Today we are in Samburu County in Northern Kenya. And Mt Ololokwe is one of several granite massifs that straddle the expansive County. Other include fold mountains such as the Ndotto Range and Mathews Range further up North - among several other beautiful mountains and mountain ranges. The North of Kenya is a beautiful part of the country that too few of us majority of Kenyans are aware of (wake up compatriots....we are missing out on a very beautiful part of our motherland!). I think it is my purpose in life; among many other purposes, some probably lesser and others greater. I am once again headed North to one of my favorite parts of our beautiful Kenya. Samburu, Shaba, the Laikipia Plateau and the North of Kenya remain the last unspoilt bastions of Kenya. No wonder white settlers hold on to large swathes and chunks of this very fertile and unspoilt wilderness in the name of conservancies and ranches...a surprise in itself in this day and age of openness and freedom and democracy and all the fancy words used by the Neocolonialists to subjugate, repress and suppress the already downtrodden of the world. NARO MORU AND THE MOUNTAIN

Kenya at sunrise   Alia, my sister in law from Mombasa and her daughter in law and children have coming visiting us in Nairobi after Abdallah's engagement.   Abdallah has gotten hitched to Muskan. Mzahim (Alia's son) and his wife, Randa and their 3 very well behaved children have travelled from UAE for the occasion. The engagement party in Mombasa was a small family affair but well managed and smooth apart from the crazy traffic snarlups that Mombasa is now famous for. Mzahim got only two days off so he is back to work in UAE. Randa and kids have a few more days and as a revenge for their superlative hospitality whenever we visit UAE; Muna and I have decided to give them a revenge treat.  A road trip to Naro Moru and the Mountain. THE NORTHWEST OF KENYA - Human Endurance, Harsh Climate

  “Doing what you like is freedom, liking what you do is happiness.”  – Frank Tyger. Today I'm off to Northwest Kenya. To the largest county in Kenya - Turkana. I have to go and view a plot in Kakuma for a Children's Centre. We fly off from Wilson Airport via Eldoret. After the routine security checks we sit in the departure lounge - yes the famous-squeezed-one with the fame of children crying. The flight is on time and we arrive safely in Eldoret. Then a 15 minutes stopover to drop and pickup other passengers. We take off for Lodwar in due time having sat in the squeezed seats of the Dash 800 aeroplane. This is a very different and scenic flight over Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties before entering Turkana. Several mountain ranges dot the country here. The skies are clear - not a good sign.   THE DANGEROUS ROAD "IF YOU DONT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING - THEN ANY ROAD WILL LEAD YOU THERE." - LEWIS CARROL If I had known that this road is used often by Al Shabaab Terrorists I wouldn't have agreed to travel it. In fact it has a nickname - "The Al Shabaab Road" --- all this was withheld from me till the end of the journey back in Wajir The elders were clever. They only said that we have to go East of Wajir, about 25km.  "It's just on the outskirts of Wajir ... about half hour away from our site", said the Chairman Thats how they lured me into this trip. As usual the 25km estimate was an underestimate .... it was actually 45km one way! And it took at least an hour plus .. one way! The reason for this trip, "He has offered us 240 tonnes of aggregate, for free! A donation to the construction of the Hudheifa Masjid". .... that's how they put it!   I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy  Ernest Hemingway THE DIVINE NILE AT JUBA South Sudan (SSD) is the youngest independent Country in Africa. Years of domination by the  largely Arabic speaking  North part of this largest of countries in Africa has left the South steeped in desolate ignorance and deliberate neglect - making it one of the least developed nations in the world with one of the highest levels of illiteracy anywhere. Politics aside, this largely untouched land mass is one of the most endowed countries in Africa with huge deposits of oil, natural gas and other minerals. SSD is larger than Kenya and Uganda combined with large swathes of forest, savannah and the Sud - the famous swamp into which the Nile disappears and reappears several hundred kilometers later....an ecological miracle in itself! LAMU & MPEKETONI: A tale of donkeys & boda bodas

Probably 18 or 20 years ago. It must have changed since then. AGENTS OF CHANGE: There have been major parameters that have been agents of change in the world and specifically in Kenya. Climate change. Mobile phones. Spread of Internet. Boda bodas - yes yes Boda Bodas have been a major agent of change in Africa - I am digressing but I have to say this..... in Africa today even the most remote regions are now just a ride away and the youth are widely and largely empowered by Boda Bodas.  But with tongue in cheek I am informed by a local boda boda rider that certainly more than half of babies born in our maternity wards are fathered by Boda Bodas riders since they have the ready cash and small change needed to sort out the immediate and urgent needs of our young and middle aged families. OLDONYO SABUK - A get together of COGS

    IN UNITY IS STRENGTH The High School I went to was called Nairobi Technical High School - located in the Park Road area of the Northern suburbs of Nairobi. I studied there from Form 1 to Form 6 after which I went ahead to pursue studies in Architecture. Over the years we lost touch with classmates and school mates. At high school we had very special bonds amongst the students. There was a good mix of African and Asian students and an even better mix of those who were well off and a larger proportion of those who were leaning more towards being poor. Yet the human bonds were not affected by these divides. We lived, played, studied, suffered and enjoyed together. But the sickle of time mowed down our contacts and by the time I was at Uni; I had lost most of my connections from High School - apart from Kigondu - with whom we have been in touch and together ever since - thanks to God for this.
